One of the most unique and amazing experiences at the Ranch is the 7 Mile Breakfast Hike. Cool because, number one, you’ve done a complete seven mile workout by 9am, the views are incredible and oh, breakfast. There’s something about spending your first meal of the day at the top of a mountain…it’s awesome! The breakfast burrito is, not going to lie, probably one of the best I’ve ever had. Plus the muffins and granola…let’s just say I was plenty full. After breakfast is the easiest part of the hike, mainly downhill, then you’re done before you know it! Just in time for stretch class…
For those of us who aren’t morning people, the afternoon Alex Oak Hike is a chance for the rest of us to take in the beautiful mountains, be one with nature and see the Ranch from a different perspective. This is a fairly easy hike (two miles round trip) and it’s quick too, only 45 minutes. Perfect afternoon workout in my opinion. What I love about the hike are the fantastic views of the Ranch plus La Cocina Que Canta, the majestic birds (mainly turkey vultures and hawks) that fly almost up close and sweeping mountain ranges that can only be seen once you get to the top of the hike. So beautiful! A must do while at the Ranch.
I know that for me, it’s really hard to get up at 6am to go on the morning hikes, but I’m always happy when I do. This particular one was magical. We started just as the sun was coming up over the far mountains, but on the other side the full moon was in clear view. We had both the sun and the moon in the sky almost parallel to each other. It was breathtaking. I hope these photos give you a little sneak peek at what it was like. Of course, nothing actually compares to being at the top of the mountain at the break of dawn, but the pictures are a happy reminder.
I am not a morning person, just putting that out there. However I love hiking and I love food so when I saw the Organic Breakfast Hike on the schedule I was intrigued. The only set back was that it was at 6:10am. Very early by my standards! I decided to give it a shot though and it was so worth it. Yes, it was hard to get out of bed (not going to lie), but once I was up and out the door at 6, it felt great. The sun was just coming up, the birds were chirping and the little bunny rabbits were hopping along (so cute!). I met everyone at the Main Lounge and then we started our hike towards the organic Farm.
The hike is about two miles to the farm and was a fairly easy hike across some little rolling hills. Perfect for the early morning when you’re just waking up and have no food in your stomach. The promise of delicious organic breakfast definitely kept me moving. The scenery was gorgeous and the weather was warm, but not too hot. So far I was thoroughly enjoying myself and I knew the best part was yet to come. Eventually we came to the farm which has rows upon rows of beautiful organic vegetables and beautiful flower gardens as you can see in the photos.
We were greeted by a friendly cat who I learned later on is the resident guard protecting the farm from rodents. The breakfast was served where they actually hold all of their cooking classes at the farm. Everything looked so delicious and I could not wait to dig in. I’m somewhat of a health nut and really try to eat organic whenever I can, so the fact that all the fruits and vegetables were grown right here on the farm was the icing on the cake. I piled on my plate everything I could.
The oatmeal had a fantastic flavor even by itself. I added a poached plum which is one of the sweetest most delicious things I’ve ever tasted! I have sort of sweet tooth so I couldn’t pass up the chocolate muffins either. I absolutely loved the eggs with the greens and salsa. The roasted veggies were amazing as well and so pretty!
You can tell that the chef, Denise Roa, absolutely loves her job and puts her heart and soul into what she does. She was kind enough to give us a little background on the farm and told us about the cooking class later today (which I absolutely need to take next time I’m here). Then she introduced us to Salvador Tinajero who oversees everything grown on the farm.
Salvador gave us a little garden tour where he showed us all the new summer veggies that were just starting to grow. I have never met anyone so passionate about farming and gardening. It was really inspiring and I really want to start my own garden now more than ever.
Most of all, it was just great being outside, enjoying delicious food and scenery. I honestly can’t think of a better way to start the day. Hopefully I will have a chance to do this again…I would do it every morning if I could!
